Webster Thomas Student Honors Principal with Scholarship Essay
Congratulations to Webster Thomas senior Trevor H. and Webster Thomas Principal Glenn Widor! On April 24, Trevor was honored as a SAANYS Scholarship Award winner! His essay was about Mr. Widor, “A school administrator who has made a difference in his life.”
Cheryl Bamford, SAANYS Region 11 Scholarship Coordinator, congratulated Mr. Widor, stating, "On behalf of the Scholarship Selection Committee and the Region 11 Executive Committee, it is my great pleasure to congratulate you for being the person identified as that administrator by Trevor Heaphy.”
During the awards ceremony, Trevor read his $1,000 winning essay while standing at the podium with Mr. Widor. In his essay, Trevor recounted a pivotal connection he made with Mr. Widor at the end of his junior year during a global impact project. Initially shy and reserved, Trevor explained that this hindered his engagement in the service projects.
He credited Mr. Widor with helping him overcome his shyness. A simple act of Trevor offering assistance to Mr. Widor carrying heavy bags led to a conversation where Trevor began to see his principal beyond his official role, noting, “As we talked, I really started to get to know him beyond just as my principal. I could start to feel a real bond form.”
Later that evening, during a group reflection, Mr. Widor named Trevor as his "MVP" of the day. This seemingly small gesture had a profound impact on Trevor, igniting his confidence.
Trevor wrote, “The next day I was just so much more social with everyone. His gratitude broke me out of my shell and it was the first domino that would lead to a complete change in how I went about life for the better.”
Trevor's essay beautifully illustrates the significant positive influence a school leader can have on a student's life, even through seemingly minor interactions.
