Senior Scholars Share Lessons Learned Through Service

The Webster Thomas High School library transformed into a hub of inspiration on May 29 as the Titan Service Scholars hosted their annual exhibition. The event celebrated the profound service-learning journeys of graduating seniors, providing a platform for these dedicated students to share their impactful endeavors with staff, students, family, friends, and service partners.

The Titan Service Scholars program empowers students to enhance their personal and interpersonal development through a blend of service learning, research, and reflection. By establishing sustainable and reciprocal service partnerships, these students work to uplift both local and global communities.

Throughout their four-year journey, service scholars must navigate a structured framework designed to maximize community impact and personal growth. The program is built upon the four foundational pillars of Exploration, Engagement, Commitment, and Commencement.

Rather than simply clocking volunteer hours, the Titans dive deep into the root causes of societal challenges. Every project requires students to actively address a critical issue by pre-learning about the topic, setting a clear intention, serving directly, reflecting on the experience, and ultimately advocating for the cause.

This year, Webster Thomas celebrates 17 graduating seniors who have each completed 150+ hours of community service, leaving a lasting legacy both locally and globally.

During the exhibition, these scholars demonstrated exceptional achievement of New York State Social Emotional Learning (SEL) outcomes and presented comprehensive research tied to their service. Furthermore, several students utilized this exhibition as their capstone project to achieve the New York State Seal of Civic Readiness—a formal recognition honoring students who have attained a high level of proficiency in civic knowledge, skills, mindset, and hands-on civic experiences.

"These scholars haven't just volunteered; they have researched, reflected, and advocated to create sustainable change. They embody what it means to be truly civic-minded leaders," said program coordinator Felice Prindle.
