From the Classroom to the Capitol
Webster pride is beaming as student leaders from Webster Schroeder and Webster Thomas high schools once again demonstrated exceptional civic leadership at the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute (PRHYLI) trainings. These dedicated students have been going above and beyond their standard school hours, diving deep into the legislative process and the four pillars of legislative impact: political, social, economic, and cultural. They aren't just reading headlines, they are researching diversity perspectives and implications, thinking critically, and debating-- all while mastering the art of parliamentary procedure. This work is in preparation for a trip to Albany in April, where they will delve into some of New York State's most pressing and complex proposed laws regarding public health, civil rights, and the future of technology.
Many of our students campaigned for high-stakes leadership roles that will define their upcoming trip to the State Capitol building. Positions won by our students for the Albany event are: Assistant Speaker - Kyara M.; Majority Whip - Claudia B.; Sponsor of Bill #4 - Lukas V.; Assembly Representatives - Jaeden C. and Nathan V.; Sponsor for Bill #4 - Engley C.; and Majority Whip Alternate - Kaylani C.
Our students are positioning themselves at the very heart of legislative action. These students aren't just learning about the future -- they are practicing how to lead it. Their commitment to understanding diverse perspectives is what true statesmanship looks like.
