Beyond the Classroom: Students Explore Magic of Public Library
Webster Central School District (CSD) third-grade students are strengthening their connection with community resources through an enriching field trip program to the Webster Public Library.Recently, third graders from Plank Road North Elementary School visited the Webster Public Library, marking the start of a year-long initiative that will see all Webster CSD elementary third grade classes visit the facility. A highlight of the trip for every student was receiving their very own Webster Public Library Card, granting them immediate access to the library's vast collection.
Students were introduced to the children’s and teen librarians, who provided a comprehensive, "backstage pass" tour of the community treasure. The tour covered key areas including the Children’s Room, Community Room, main book drop, staff offices, tech services, and study areas. Students learned fun facts and circulation information, including that the library boasts a collection of over 80,000 books. During the tour, librarians shared several of their favorite books, reading several selections to the Webster CSD students. Following the tour, students were invited to browse the collections and select a book to check out using their newly acquired library cards.
Michael Roller, Webster CSD Director of Fine Arts and Library, emphasized the value of the experience. “The joy of reading could be felt throughout the space,” he said. “In addition to their school library, our students now can go with their family to have access to topics and interest areas that will expand their horizons and nurture the possibilities of their interaction with the world around them.”
“Special thanks to our elementary library media specialists and grade level classroom teachers who accompanied their students to the wonderful community treasure we have here in our own backyard,” Roller added.
This program aims to foster a lifelong love of reading and provide students with essential access to the expansive educational resources available at their local public library.
