Social Media & Your Kids

Social media is designed to be addictive and distracting. Learn about this and more as award winning poet, filmmaker, and speaker Max Stossel presents “Social Media and Your Kids” on Tuesday, October 4 at 7:00 p.m. in the Webster Schroeder High School auditorium, 875 Ridge Road. Refreshments will be available beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Stossel ran social media for multinational brands and worked for a social media company where he designed some of the same notification structures to distract people that he now raises awareness about. He has spoken with hundreds of thousands of students, parents, and educators around the world about social media’s impact on our lives and provides a unique and much needed critical perspective on the role of technology in schools and in our society.
The founder of Social Awakening and youth and education advisor for Center for Humane Technology, an organization of former tech insiders and CEOs dedicated to realigning technology with humanity’s best interests, Stossel will present “Social Media and Your Kids” to One Webster parents/guardians and interested community members. While students are welcome, this is a parent-focused presentation; it will illustrate some of the specific ways technology is designed to be addictive and distracting, give an overview of how students are using social media, and give recommendations on how to improve focus and diminish distraction in learning environments.
Stossel will also give similar, although more student-focused presentations to students at all four of Webster CSD’s secondary schools.

Stossel’s time in Webster is sponsored by Webster CSD, Webster Central PTSA, and Webster Health Education Network: A Drug Free Community Coalition.
Stossel’s work has been translated to 14 languages, won multiple film festivals, and has been viewed over 20 million times online. He has been featured on outlets such as BBC, Bustle, BuzzFeed, CNN, Daily Mail, and Mashable.
