"Spring Into Your Future" Career Day

On Friday March 20th, 10th grade students in both high schools participated in the "Spring Into Your Future" Career Day event.

The events kicked-off with a keynote address in the high school auditoriums. The keynotes were delivered by executives from nextSTeP Publishing, Inc., publishers of nextSTeP magazine, a locally produced and nationally distributed magazine that focuses on college and career information for high school students.  Laura Hammond, Vice President and Editor-in-Chief spoke at Thomas, while David Mammano, founder and President, spoke at Schroeder

Students then reported to classrooms to participate in two Career Cluster-specific workshop sessions (for more information on Career Clusters see http://www.nycareerzone.org from the New York State Department of Labor). Students completed surveys during the last week of February to identify areas of interest. That information was used to assign students to speakers and topics from career clusters that matched their interests.

Between the two high schools, over thirty different speakers from a wide-variety of career areas spoke to our students. Speakers graciously volunteered their time to share their stories, experiences, and expertise with our students. This helped us fulfill our goal of providing students with both career-specific information and a full scope of opportunities within a particular field.

While this event began to take root last spring during the first Webster School-Business Connections School-Business Forum, the impetus for this undertaking came from the direction provided by the Board of Education's goals for the 2009-10 school year. The inclusion of a career-focused indicator in the Student Achievement goal helped coalesce our committee around a common purpose, with a direct link to the Board's vision.

From all accounts, this was a successful event for all who participated and another fine example of the collaborative spirit that exists in the Webster school community!
