Nonfiction Literacy Skills
for Webster Schools
Research has shown that 80 - 90% of what adults read is nonfiction. Approximately 96% of sites on the internet contain informational text. (Kamil and Lane, 1998.) Learning to become successful consumers of information takes a high level of skill. Students must be able to analyze and prioritize the information given to them at any time, in any subject area. In nonfiction, both print and non-print sources require students to determine the information’s relevancy, reliability, and objectivity.
